The notion of Workplace Counselling is not akin to rigorous therapy. It is a mild increment to our productivity at work.

In the contemporary context, where days at work are lightning fast, stress is omnipresent. No corporate has the privilege to say that they are absolutely stress free. Packed deadlines, competitive atmospheres and pent up emotions are common motifs at the workplace. To dispel these, and create a vent for these emotional palettes, something like workplace counselling forms the ideal framework.

Why Workplace Counselling?

Having a counsellor at the workplace creates a neutral and unbiased platform to bring problems to. It also enables a significant reduction of stress arising from rigorous hours and strained interactions at work. These services enable employees to submerge themselves into a calming, controlled environment in the midst of their day in the hectic matrix of everyday life. Workplace counselling makes people learn how to be assertive and approachable at work, and not lose their temper or burst in response to stress.

 

Why We Discount the Need for Workplace Counselling

Several workspaces discount the need for counselling and assistance programs. They cite that hardly any employees make use of these programs to alleviate stress. The reason given is that those opting for these often feel ashamed of being labelled as ‘mentally ill’. Corporates often feel that submitting to therapy is a way of admitting that they have some form of mental deformity. They do not understand that workplace counselling is not a corrective therapy!

It is meant for a subtle upliftment of our abilities at work. Getting into an argument at work is definitely not indicative of any mental illness. But, recurrent occurrences indicate the presence of some repressed emotions. Understanding that the sensitive context of the workplace warrants assistance with recurrent quarrelling as well is a must!

The Truth About Employee Assistance

Assistance at the workplace with stress often involves an outpouring of emotions and problems. Counsellors speak to employees about the sources of stress, and help them come up with rational ways to deal with these situations. Once the social dynamics of the workspace, and the way it reacts with individual mind-sets is understood, work becomes a cakewalk for anybody!

Workplace counselling is not rigorous, and it does not leave the stigma of ‘mental illness’ in the mind of an employee opting for it. To understand the purpose and the benefits of workplace counselling, one needs to dispel that all psychotherapy is the same. Looking at how the notion of therapy applies to the context of work is imperative to understand the benefits.
